Find and share health data for research
Health Data Australia is a national catalogue of Australian health data designed to facilitate its sharing, access, and reuse for health research. Health and medical researchers can use the platform to discover and request access to data for their own research or to register descriptions of their data to enhance discoverability by others.
On Health Data Australia, researchers can:
Health Data Australia was developed by the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) in partnership with the health research sector. The ARDC is supported by the Australian Government through the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).
Health Data Australia contains contributions from 72 Australian health research organisations organised into 9 Nodes. The listed datasets have been collected by universities, medical research institutes, clinical trials networks, and health services. They are accompanied by supporting documentation, such as study protocols and data dictionaries, to help other users better understand the data and how it can be used. The metadata in HDA originates from two sources: the ANZCTR and ClinicalTrials.gov trial registries, specifically for trials involving Australian sites.

The establishment of this node network was part of ARDC’s national initiative, the Health Studies Australian National Data Asset (HeSANDA) program. The HeSANDA program began in 2020 and continues under the ARDC’s health portfolio, the People Research Data Commons.
Under the People Research Data Commons, Health Data Australia is being expanded to incorporate a wider array of data collections, such as health cohort studies, government, and health service data. To stay up to date, subscribe to our newsletter .

To assist secondary data users in understanding the real-world impact of health and medical research data sharing, the Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) has created an online guide that outlines a theoretical framework for four key data reuse scenarios. This practical guide was extracted from research papers, and consultation with stakeholders and the research community.
With Health Data Australia, researchers can explore descriptions of data from our publishing partners, identify relevant datasets, and request access. These requests will then be forwarded to the data owner for review.
