Full description

This current project will calculate and apply the walkability index (developed previously) to CCDs surrounding public transport nodes in the NWMR. Selected high and low walkability sites will be identified based on these calculations (including at least one inner-city node), and ‘Ped-Catch’, an animated agent-based pedestrian modelling tool will be applied. Ped-catch maps pedestrian catchments with greater detail and accuracy than traditional circular catchment (400m & 800m radii) or GIS-based ‘Ped-Shed’ methods that are currently used in public health research. Ped-Catch uses programmed ‘agents’ (based on predefined rules) who navigate street networks to measure catchments around a selected node (e.g., school, railway station). Comparisons can be made between an existing street network and potential improvements through urban interventions such as pedestrian links, pedestrian bridges, alternative street layouts, or potentially freight volume as a barrier to walking. An urban designer can rapidly test many different design scenarios and can even test the impact of pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.
