This series consists of files created by the Department of Planning between 1989 and 2009 relating to planning and development in the Sydney region of New South Wales.
The files were created to capture records relating to the activities, functions and key business decisions made by the Department of Planning concerning the Sydney region and to record key policy decisions regarding major planning and assessments for building and infrastructure in the Sydney region.
The files were created by various units within the Department of Planning including, the Regulatory Reform Unit, the Environmental Policy and Planning Division, the Legal Branch, the Assessments Branch, the Government infrastructure Development Branch, the Planning and Design Branch, the Metropolitan and Regional Management Branch and the Heritage Assessment Resources Division Branch.
The files include committee minutes and related papers, policy files relating to the key functions of the Department, files relating environmental impact planning, assessments and statements, files containing ministerial briefings, files related to urban design, planning and infrastructure development, files reviewing legislation, heritage development and rezoning and files containing documents related to legal cases involving the Department. Also included in the series are files relating to specific development applications or specific projects within the Sydney region and files regarding building certifications, development and environmental plans for specific local government areas.
Each file number is prefixed with the letter "S" indicating the files contents refers to an area in the Sydney region, and the year.
While the series was first created in 1989, there are records dating back as early as the late 1940s. Each consignment has been arranged in file number order. Included within some of the files in the series are plans, maps, photographs, DVDs and CDs.
