Brief description Access to a modern Cathodoluminescence Facility will significantly enhance Australian research in the rapidly emerging field of opto-electronics, particularly nanostructured light-emitting materials and devices. These technologies will improve and, in some cases, transform many aspects of everyday life, enabling the development of low cost solid state lighting, biological sensors, large area displays, high capacity data storage and high speed computers. The CL system will provide the opportunity for Australian researchers to develop and capture intellectual property in this highly lucrative industry. Postgraduate programs utilising this resource will establish a strong local base of expertise in this important area of nanotechnology.
