This series was created to record deaths occurring on board ships in Victorian waters as required under an Act for Registering Births, Deaths, and Marriages in the Colony of Victoria No.26 1853.XV. If any of Her Majesty's Subjects shall die at sea on board of any British or Colonial vessel trading regularly to any Port in the said Colony, the Master or Officer in command of the vessel onboard of which such death shall have happened, shall forthwith make a minute of the several particulars hereby required to be inserted in the register, touching such death so far as the same may be known, and the name of the vessel wherein the death took place; and shall on the arrival of such vessel in any Port of the said Colony, or by any other sooner opportunity, send a certificate of the said minute through the Post Office to the Chief Registrar, who shall file the same, and enter a copy thereof under his hand in the Marine Register Book, and keep the same with the other Registers according to the provisions of this Act.
Information contained: When died and latitude and longitude; Name and surname, rank and profession, sex and age, Cause of death, duration of last illness, medical attendant by whom certified and when he last saw deceased; name and surname of father and mother if known, with rank and profession; signature, description and former residence of informant and witnesses; signature of captain or master, date, where registered (lat. and long.); When buried; name and religion of minister or names of witnesses of burial; where born; if deceased was married - where, at what age and to whom, issue in order of birth, their names and ages.
