Brief description To adapt Australian cities to climate change, architects and developers are increasingly turning to green roofs to reduce stormwater runoff and cool buildings. However, designs commonly used worldwide (porous substrates with monocultures of succulents) don’t always deliver these ecosystem services. With our partners, we will transform green roof function by learning from natural habitats with similar conditions, selecting plants and substrates to minimise nutrient and water loss while maximising building cooling. We will test fundamental questions about the importance of functional and species diversity in constructed ecosystems. Results will be validated on a purpose built green roof and used to develop performance models and policies.
