Full description
This series comprises name indexes to patients recorded in the Registers of patients and admissions books and to Medical case books for Callan Park Hospital. (1)
The handwritten books have four columns headed: number in register, name, case book – no. [number]/folio, and remarks.
Case book number/folio number indexes the Medical case books, while the alphabetical arrangement of the books and registration numbers provide an index to patients. The remarks column is usually used to record the discharge, transfer or death of the patient and the date of that event. Entries are usually crossed through for patients no longer at the hospital. As an index book was filled or the majority of patients had left and been crossed out, a new index book was begun with existing patients entered from the previous index. Dates of indexes may therefore overlap.
The index books are arranged alphabetically by the last names of the patients. Separate index books were sometimes kept for male and female patients.
