Brief description

This data set contains abundance data on fishes from mangrove, seagrass and coral reef habitats in the Caribbean and Great Barrier Reef.

Full description

Data was collected from the Caribbean and the Great Barrier Reef to quantify the amount of taxonomic overlap between habitats in order to explore how this differs between biogeographic realms. In each habitat, the area with the highest fish species diversity was sampled, i.e. the reef crest, the seagrass edge and the mangrove edge (in this study mangroves were represented by clear-water mangroves). Timed swims were conducted at each sampling site. A transect consisted of a 20 minute timed swim recording any fishes greater than 10 cm total length on a 5 m wide belt transect. This was followed by a 10 minute timed swim as the diver swam back towards the starting point recording any fishes less than 10 cm total length. In total, 76 surveys were conducted (38 > 10cm & 38 <10 cm; 32 reef, 24 seagrass, 20 mangrove). All abundance data were standardised to the number of individuals per 100 m2.
