The French exploration collection focuses on the period of the late 18th and early 19th century voyages which opened up the Pacific. In this period of intense rivalry between France and Britain, the French voyages were major scientific expeditions which took great interest in the ethnography of the regions they were exploring. Comprising approximately 80 objects, the French exploration collection includes official accounts of the voyages of Bougainville, La Perouse and D'Entrecasteaux, and charts and images relating to the voyages of Baudin, Freycinet and D'Urville. The collection provides a foil to the record of British exploration of the Asia Pacific region during the same period.Data time period: 1677 to 1846
