Encoding active tactile sensing in the brain involves understanding how information about what we touch arrives in the brain and how the brain makes sense of this information. Data was collected from experiments on approximately 60 anaesthetised rat's brains using a fine microelectrode to measure electrical changes across the cell membranes when a stimulus is applied to the whiskers. Rat whiskers are very sensitive and are used by the rat to gather information about objects. As the whiskers are on the rat's face it is easy to move them in a precisely defined motion, and record, using Spike2 data acquisition, how the rat's brain is making sense of different types of motion. Monash University, Department of Physiology PhD students, Duwage Alwis and Heidi Gaulke assisted two researchers, Ramesh Rajan and Vladimir Dubaj in generating and analysing the data.Notes
