Full description
In 1940 the administrative structure of the Department of Agriculture was reorganised, so as to provide educational and investigative services specific to the work of each division of the department. The 30 previously existing branches were reduced to eight divisions, namely, Plant Industry, Horticulture, Animal Industry, Dairying, Science and Research, Marketing, Information and Extension Services and Administrative. (1) The Division of Horticulture was created in the first half of 1941. (2)The Division was created through the amalgamation of the Fruit, Export and Import, and Viticulture Branches (3). The main function and responsibilities of the Division included the production, marketing and export of fruit. The Division provided research, extension and regulatory services to assist industries involved in the growing and post – harvest handling of fruit crops such as citrus and tropical fruits, apples and pears, stone fruits, berries, and nuts. (4)
The division was abolished in October 1980 when it was amalgamated with the Division of Plant Industry to form the Division of Plant Industries (5)
