The GPS base station was erected over one of the reference marks for the International Satellite Triangulation Station Pageos ISTS 0044, 1969. The absolute accuracy of the base station survey marks used is of a 'few metres' according to the AUSLIG (now Geoscience Australia) National Geodetic Database notes supplied with the data. The internal accuracy of the survey should be within 1 metre. Full description

Alistair Grinbergs (Heritage Officer) was on Heard island in January and February 2000) as part of the 2000 ANARE, to make an assessment of the heritage value of the old ANARE station ruins. This GPS survey data of the corners of buildings and other artefacts will form part of the record of the station site, together with drawings and other measurements.

The assessment will be used to formulate a conservation management plan for the site.
