Full description
The Department of Information Technology and Management was established in April 1999 as a department of the NSW Public Sector responsible to the Minister for Information Technology. The purpose of the department was to deliver whole of government strategies, policies and projects for information management, information technology, telecommunications, land titling and valuing in New South Wales including collecting, storing and retrieving spatial and textual land information in New South Wales. The department consisted of four administrative areas: a) Office of Information Technology b) Land and Property Information c) Offices of Forestry Information d) The Office of Western Sydney.
a) Office of Information Technology (OIT)
This agency was formerly an office of the Premier's Department. The office was responsible for developing and driving whole of government strategies for the use of information technology and telecommunications. It provided a focus within the NSW Government for the use and development of information technology and communications within and between government, industry and the community (2)
b) Land and Property Information (LPINSW)
This agency is a Government Business Enterprise providing land, property and valuing information and series. The services provided by LPINSW include deeds and parcel-based land registration; land title consultancy; topographic and cadastral mapping; surveying; spatial information; cartography; aerial photography; international land information training and consultancy; remote sensing and land valuations for rating and taxation. These services were previously provided by the Land Titles Office, the Land Information Centre and the Valuer-General's Office.(3)
c) Offices of Forestry Information
The office was responsible for the management of forestry policy and forestry industry structural reform. The Office was responsible for developing policies for the sustainable management of the State's forests and developing strategic plans for new forestry initiatives. It provided support for the Forestry Advisory Council and implemented industry development, worker assistance and training strategies under the Forestry Industry Structural Adjustment Package. (4)
d) The Office of Western Sydney
This office was established to achieve significant improvements in the economic performance, social development and urban environment of Western Sydney. The Office provided strategic advice to the Government on Western Sydney Issues and provided strategic leadership for the region. The Office works with business, local government and other key organisations to secure jobs and investment; support families and communities; deliver better government services; and protect the environment. On 2 April 2003, the Department of Information Technology and Management was abolished and its branches were transferred as follows:
The Office of Information Technology became part of the Department of Commerce;
The Forestry Industry Structural Adjustment Unit was added to the Department of Sustainable Natural Resources;
The Office of Western Sydney was added to the Department of State and Regional Development;
All of the remaining branches were transferred to the Department of Lands. (6)
