The Centre for Health Research (CHR) within the School of Medicine at Western Sydney University, has a specific focus on multidisciplinary research to tackle major health challenges for Western Sydney, and similar communities nationally and globally. It has unique expertise in qualitative and mixed-method research examining the construction and experience of health, and in conducting randomised controlled trials to assess self-management and preventive interventions.  As well as collecting original health and clinical outcome data, the Centre also aims to make best use of existing health data collections and linked health datasets. 

The Centre works in partnership with health services and policy agencies to conduct its research across a number of major themes: sexual and reproductive health; chronic disease including cancer; population health; mental health and wellbeing; healthy environments; and health policies and services.

The Centre for Health Research has active research programs and supervises PhD candidates in a range of areas including:

  1. Qualitative and mixed-method research in the areas of gender, sexuality and health, with a focus on: women's reproductive health, LGBTI health, migrant and refugee health. 
  2. Qualitative and mixed-method research in cancer survivorship and psycho-oncology. 
  3. Epidemiology and Population Health with interests in indigenous health, drug and alcohol, non-communicable disease, global health, climate change, and health services research.
  4. Mental health in the areas of eating disorders, evidence based medicine, and mental health literacy.
