Brief description

Geoscience Australia defines a borehole as the generalized term for any narrow shaft drilled in the ground, either vertically or horizontally, and includes Mineral Drillholes, Petroleum Wells and Water Bores along with a variety of others types, but does not include Costean, Trench or Pit.

For the purpose of a borehole as defined by GeoSciML Borehole, the dataset has been restricted to onshore and offshore Australian boreholes, and bores that have the potential to support geological investigations and assessment of a variety of resources.

Lineage

The data resides in the enterprise database environment and has been sourced from a variety of places including (but not limited to) Mineral and Petroleum Exploration companies, State Geological Surveys and Water Authorities as well as internal drilling programs.
The initial services designed to deliver the Borehole data were implemented as part of the Bioregional Assessments Information Platform project, a collaborative partnership between Geoscience Australia (GA) and the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) commissioned by the Office of Water Science (OWS). Through the three partners, this project brings together the Australian Government's leading national environmental informatics research, hydro-geological assessment and water information delivery capabilities. The information contained within this data set has been selected from the GA corporate data with the following business logic applied: a.Security rating of the data is open file b.Only active records are included c.Only Australian Records are included d.A decision was made to exclude any boreholes that had no defined location.
This data now supports multiple internal and external requirements for a consolidated whole of Australia Borehole dataset and will serve as the single point of truth to deliver data services for Geoscience ML (GeoSciML) and Groundwater ML (GWML).
