Brief description

Abalone growth data include estimates from growth increment data from tagging studies, and from shell ageing studies. Data has been collected from all Tasmanian state waters since 1986.

Lineage

Maintenance and Update Frequency: irregular
Statement: Growth increment data were either collected from annual Tagging/tag recapture studies, or from multi-recapture studies at quarterly or irregular intervals.

Growth estimates from shell ageing is still conducted for greenlip abalone (Haliotis laevigata), but has been abandoned for blacklip abalone (Haliotis rubra) since 2001.

Notes

Purpose
To provide information for the sustainable management of the state's abalone fishery via a variety of methods, including setting appropriate size limits, modelling estimates of abundance and detecting changes in median length of abalone.
