Full description
A Sale Art Group was formed in March 1959. The object of the Group was the furthering of art appreciation of existing paintings, and the teaching of painting and drawing. In 1964 Sale City Council made a building available for an art gallery and Victorian State Government aid was sought to implement the plan. The gallery opened in 1965 as the Sale Regional Arts Centre. The Centre was built within the Sale Civic Complex of buildings above the library. The Constitution of the Sale Regional Arts Centre stated that one of the objects of the Centre was to conduct itself as an organ of the Mayor Councillors and Citizens of the City of Sale in the furtherance of its other objects. In 1995 the Centre relocated into the Wellington Shire Offices and changed its name to the Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale. This series includes minutes of meetings of the Sale Art Group (1959-1967). The extant minutes of the Sale Regional Arts Centre date from September 1971. The constitution stipulated that an Executive Committee be selected by ballot. This series includes minutes of the Executive Committee from June 1993 to May 1994.
